THE INORDINARY EXPERIENCES - DAY 2 (ZI HUEY)

THE INORDINARY EXPERIENCES - DAY 2 (ZI HUEY)

After a week, we went to the Zoo Negara again to continue our volunteering work. This time, I was in a group with Chiau Yen, Zhi Lun, Catherine and Jiah Yee. We were in- charge of the reptile area.  Again, we were asked to clean up the surroundings of the reptile area and also to feed the tortoises.

The tortoises are already 100 years old, they are way older than me!

We were also given the opportunities to bathe the tortoises by using water and moist their shells with cooking oil.

When we were on our way to send the old and empty aquariums to the aquaria, the zookeepers told us that the reptile area will undergo renovation and the reptiles have to be moved to other places to keep them safe. I realized that it is important for us human to protect the animals and to conserve their living places. We are the one who exploited their living places, and that is why it is our responsibilities to make sure that the animals are being protected.

Besides that, as many might wonder, how becoming a zoo volunteer could contribute to the society? I must say, animals are also part of the living members on the earth and they are also part of the society, that is why they have their rights to receive a better life for themselves. It is our responsibilities to take care of the society and to interact with each member of the earth’s society. By becoming the zoo volunteers, we would know the correct way to protect the animals from being hunted and extinction.

Moreover, we managed to have some interactions with the zookeepers and the tourists who visited the zoo. The zookeepers had provided us with a lot of valuable knowledge and information regarding the animals that we would not know if we were not the volunteers and being so close to the animals. For example, the zookeepers taught us how to differentiate the gender of the tortoises by checking on their underneath shells. And also the reason of putting a layer of oil on the tortoise’s shell, which is to prevent the shell from becoming dry and be infected by diseases. There are also tourists who approached us to get more information on the zoo and animals when they realized that we are the volunteers. I felt very happy that I could share the knowledge I received from the zookeepers with the tourists even though I did not directly involved in the education and public speaking activities. By doing so, I believe that we could promote the importance and awareness to protect the animals to the society, especially the younger generation to encourage them to put more effort on loving the animals and protecting them.

All in all, I’m glad that we have been given this opportunity to contribute something to the society and gained awesome and unforgettable experiences from our volunteering activities.
